Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 Appearance:
The box of Maravillas 8 is a work of art in itself, a high gloss lacquered wooden cabinet painted in a lavish red and gold colors; on par with a box of Cohiba Behike. The cigar itself comes with a unique 2020 Chinese year of the rat foot band, a red ring with a golden stylized Rat, in addition to the regular Romeo y Julieta band. The Maravillas 8 is an impressive cigar, thick and pretty heavy and has a rather rustic looking wrapper. It is of a nice Milk chocolate color (Colorado wrapper) and few veins are visible, however the wrapper is seamless and its texture is silky smooth. Its construction looks amazing as the triple cap is perfectly applied.
Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The wrapper gives off aromas of hay, barnyard, thyme and laurel. It is very vegetal and despite being young tobacco but there are no traces of ammonia. On the lips, some flavors of spices, with some hints of dried earth.
After a clean cut, the Maravillas 8 offers a good draw, with the perfect amount of resistance, and it is very smooth. Once lit up, the cigar smokes beautifully and effortlessly.
The Maravillas 8 starts off some beautiful flavors of coffee with milk, some sweet spices (cinnamon mostly), some young cedar notes. It is very floral and quite sweet, in the background there is also some pepper and some cherry notes. At times, there is also some roasted nuts, fresh aromatic herbs and some hints of citrus. The flavors are fairly creamy and mild-medium overall, and there is no harshness at all, no traces of ammonia, while the body is around the medium mark. The construction of the cigar is excellent, the smoke is silky smooth while the draw remains very consistent, just tight enough. The ash is building up beautifully at the foot of the cigar and it is holding on until the halfway mark.
In the middle third, the Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 remain perfect on all sides construction, flavor and burn. The draw remains as good as it was, the burn requires almost no attention, and can stay lit even after 3 or 4 minutes in the ashtray, albeit the burn line is not perfectly straight as it was earlier. The ash is holding on very well and allows the cigar to smoke cool and develop a nice creamy smoke. The flavor profile remains on the same notes, with even more pepper and more wood now. There are still lots of floral notes, and some nice hints of fruits, (lychee, cherry and lime) and some underlying sweetness (almost salted caramel or licorice). The youth of the tobacco shows up more at this stage as it is a bit stronger, the body is between the medium to medium to full-bodied.
The Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 remains amazing in the final third, such consistency is amazing for a young cigar. The flavors evolve slightly to a mix mostly made of leather, cedar, pepper, aromatic herbs. Here and there, still some touches of cinnamon and sweetness (vanilla). The roughness present in the middle section has gone away and it is now pure enjoyment and pleasure of the senses. The burn remains spot on until the end and we almost burn our fingers when we need to put it down in the ashtray.
In summary: the Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 is an amazing cigar right out of the box and will only get better with 3 to 5 years of aging.
